Have you ever started a project thinking you knew exactly how you would finish it, and then by the time you are done, the result was nothing like you had imagined? With process art, this is often the case. Sometimes my vision is the same as my body's vision for what I needed to create. Usually, if I trust my body decide what I need to create, the result is far from what I imagined. This mask is a perfect example. When I made the raw mask, I imagined something out of English-Literature. Something Beowulf-like, or Green-Knight-like. Instead, I got something much more Carnival-like. Rhinestone eyebrows? Really?? OOOK.... Yet, the wild carnival-like colors brought out an intensity, a fearsome-ness, mixed with hilarity....
I love the amount of expression that can come from creating masks, and I truly enjoy seeing how peoples creations took surprising turns. Take some time to enjoy these slides. Is there a mask you really relate to? Why? Tell me.
